Surveillance is an art. Undetected surveillance is even more of an art. Surveillance is a ordinarily applied tool by Law Enforcement and Private Investigators all over America. Surveillance may take on a good deal of forms and is ordinarily applied to further an ongoing investigation. Surveillance may be a very effective tool for the investigator but it requires a great deal of hours of training and hands on experience before one becomes proficient in the art.

So, what does the word surveillance mean? The dictionary defines surveillance as 1) The close observation of a person or group, specially one under suspicion and 2) The act of observing or the condition of being observed. There are numerous reasons why Law Enforcement and Private Investigators would use surveillance in the furtherance of an investigation. However, even more crucial to the investigator is how, who, where and when will the surveillance be conducted.

Lets talk about the “How” first. The investigator needs to determine how the surveillance will be conducted. Will it be conducted on foot, perchance in buying goods mall or parking lot. Will it be conducted by car, possibly following the target from home to work. Will the traffic conditions and time of day be a factor? Will the need for aerial surveillance exist? How galore investigators will it take to conduct the surveillance? All these and a great deal of more must be determined before a surveillance may even be initiated.

Now, lets talk about the “who”. Who is the target? Sometimes, the need for a surveillance is to aid in identifying a person. Usually, the investigator already has the target identified and that led to his/her emplacement in the firstborn place. Who does the target live with or who does the target associate with? Surveillance will aid the investigators with gathering facts or intelligence. Who is the target and what is his/her background? Is the target a career criminal or repeat offender that is wise to the system? Has he/her been a former surveillance target? The investigators better recognise who they are with regards to to follow.

We have discussed the “how” and the “who”, now the investigator has to determine “where” to conduct the surveillance. Choosing the right emplacement for a surveillance may depend on what the desired outcome is to be. Is the surveillance to be conducted for gathering intel or will it lead to an arrest. Is a populated area like a mall or a parking lot going to aid the surveillance or will it be a hinderance. How easy will it be to lose the target in a crowded place, or even worse, how easy will it be for the target to spot the investigators. There are a heap of variables to consider when choosing a location. No two surveillances are ever the same.

Lastly, lets talk in regards to the “when”. Daytime and nighttime are two, very dissimilar constituents when it comes to surveillance. I could write an article solely on the divergence among the two. The investigator needs to determine when to conduct the surveillance. Sometimes, the investigator may not have a choice. Sometimes the humans we choose to follow are night owls or 3rd shifters. They don’t even leave the house until most persons are going to bed for the night. This puts a whole new twist on the surveillance. It’s much requiring little effort to get “burned” at night because there are less humans around to blend in with. Ever see the divergence amongst driving at 3pm vs driving at 3am? Both times are in truth highrisk to a surveillance. Driving at 3pm in most cities makes it easy to lose the target in traffic. Driving at 3am makes it easy for the target to spot the surveillance. So, which is it?

In closing, an investigator may never have sufficient training or hands on experience because no two surveillances are ever the same. There are just too galore variables in an ever altering society that we live in. If you ever have to hire a private investigator and the need for surveillance arises, ask him/her in regards to their training and experience. Many licensed private investigators are former police detectives who have in fact logged hundreds, and from time to time thousands of hours of surveillance. Some licensed investigators have never conducted surveillance and will seek out the assistance of those who have. Surveillance actually is an art!

5Squirrel Cam
By Jersey Chuck
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RLWXN826PLWSH This video was taken with a Kodak EasyShare DX4530 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom aimed at my Insignia HD LCD TV that is projecting the images from the Instapark 1.2GHZ Hidden Mini Pinhole Nanny / Spy Wireless Color Video Camera with Microphone.. The “Beeping” sound is from a Driveway Patrol Sensor and Receiver Kit that I have mounted inside a feeder……….. Yes I live a boring life :)

BTW, The video did lose about 10% clarity from being taken with the Kodak from the TV.

Overall a nice wireless video spy camera!

5Works great
By K. Espinosa
Camera is small and discrete. It works great and the picture and sound is acceptable. The downside is that the camera eats up 9V batteries when you use wirelessly and the camera and receiver cannot be too far apart or you will lose the signal. Also on the signal, there is intermittent static and distortion at certain times and if the camera and receiver are placed too far apart.

4Tiny… that’s for sure!

I just received my camera today and was impresses with the color quality…. not so much the sound and low lit environments. Great deal for the price though. Just make sure you have a good supply of 9volt batteries on hand because the camera powers through them pretty quick, but for the overall performance that is alright with me. Good buy!
